The John F. Barnes' Myofascial Release Approach®

Myofascial Release (MFR), unlike traditional massage and other manual therapies, strictly targets the fascial system - the 3D web of connective tissue that encapsulates, permeates, and penetrates everything in the body down to the cellular level.  When we experience injuries and trauma, the fascia and ground substance can constrict and lose its gel-like quality, essentially solidifying, which results in pain and restrictions not only in the fascia but in the surrounding tissue and muscles as well.  These restrictions can also pinch nerves, arteries, and blood vessels, causing a multitude of other problems.

What to Expect

MFR is a gentle technique performed skin-on-skin with no emollient of any kind.  The therapist patiently waits for the client’s tissues to release while performing sustained holds with gentle pressure.  The client’s restricted tissues then melt from a more solid, glue- or cement-like state to a more natural gel-like consistency.  For areas that are severely restricted, deeper techniques may be utilized.  MFR has shown great success in treating:
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Whiplash
  • Fibromyalgia
  • TMJD
  • Scar tissue
  • Sciatica
  • Adhesions
  • Muscular restrictions
  • Chronic pain
  • And much more
As tension is released from the body, it is possible that you may experience sensations in seemingly random locations that are unrelated to the area being worked on.  This is completely natural and is your body’s way of telling us what areas need to be examined and treated next.  Vasomotor sensations may include, but are not limited to, tingling, tension, twitching, soreness, flushing of the skin, and warming.  You may feel sore for the next 1-3 days, which also perfectly natural.
Because of the nature of MFR therapy work, it is recommended that men wear underwear and/or gym shorts for treatment, and women wear a sports bra and gym shorts or a two-piece bathing suit.  You are also welcome to wear a regular bra and panties, if you are comfortable doing so.  Please do not apply any lotion or moisturizer before your appointment.
For clients with allergies: two cats and one dog do reside on the premises.  Consider taking any allergy medication(s) before arrival.
Be sure to read over the FAQs and Policies when booking an appointment.
